The new start menu introduced in Windows Vista has also been used in Windows 7, however, Windows 7 users no longer have the option of changing this new start menu back to the old Windows XP classic start menu. For users who are used to the look and feel of Windows XP, and liked the start menu the way it was, there is a simple application that will replace the new menu with the classic one. “Classic Windows Start Menu” is a free program available for download here.
As you can see, the CWSM menu is very similar to the Windows XP classic start menu, but it utilizes the Vista/7 Aero Engine to render the menu to look glassy and fit in with Windows 7, instead of keeping the solid color of the classic menu. However, if the new Aero look doesn’t do anything for you, then there is an options menu which you can find by right-clicking the start menu button while the CWSN program is running and clicking on options. Under this menu, you can change the menu’s background color, gradient and transparency, as well as manage which icons appear on the menu.
